1851-1861 Halifax Census
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 06:52 BST (UK) »
My Grandmother, Annie McDanielson b.1.10.1884 was the 6th of 8 children of John William McDanielson and Elizabeth Ann McDanielson {nee Dutton}.  JW was a coal miner.   She is on the 1891 and 1901 censuses as his daughter, and he is cited as her father on her marriage certificate in 1920.    She was born at 15 Clay Street Halifax, the same address as her  sister Jane in 1883.
Originating from Ireland and settling in Bolton in early 1800’s the family was originally called McDonald, and the first 3 of JW’s 8 children are registered as McDonald, from the 4th Thomas in 1881 all registered McDanielson.
However, Annie’s birth certificate has her born at 15 Clay Streeet, daughter of EDWIN ALFRED McDanielson, Insurance Agent and Elizabeth Ann McDanielson, {nee Dutton}.

Have been unable to locate a Birth, Marriage or Death Certificate of Edwin Alfred McDanielson/McDonald, or any variation of the surname on 1871-81-91-1901 census.
Anybody able to check 1861 and 1851 census for Edwin Alfred McDonald, born possibly 1850’s in Bolton – father either William, James, Thomas or Alexander McDonald.

Or any other suggestions appreciated.
Gary

Looking on www.familyhistoryonline.net I can see no edwin mcd* on 1851 Halifax .
1861 should be online shortly at www.1861census.co.uk

Q: why are you requesting an 1851/1861 search in Halifax in your title when the body asks for a lookup in Bolton?

Can you put on the 1891 and 1901 households that you have, so that we can see what you are trying to interpret rather than just reading your deductions.

Are they in Clay Street for 1881?

Ta,
Pauline

Hi Pauline,

Thanks for your help -
Oh dear, I knew I'd get it wrong, just a beginner on here, so bear with me.
I posted the same info on Lancashire look ups to cover Bolton as well. Reason being, the family of McDonalds were settled in Bolton by 1841 and sometime in the 1860's [we think] they migrated to Halifax.  By 1870-2 the surname McDanielson [with variations] starts to appear, and by 1880 the name is firmly established.   Hence Edwin Alfred might be originally a McDonald?  Confused?  I am!

1881 - 2 Hardcastle Buildings
William McDanielson, 32, Clay Miner, Bolton Lancs
Elizabeth Ann, wife, 29, Cotton Rover, Stockport
John W, Son, 7, Scholar, Halifax
Thomas, Son, 3, Halifax

1891 - 5 Steep Bank Side, Southowram Bank
John W McDanielson, 41, Banksman Coal Miner, Bolton
Elizabeth A, wife, 39, Stockport
John W, Son, 17, Labourer, Coal mine and....
Thomas 10, Jane 8, Annie 6, Arthur 4

1901 - 28 Oates Street, Halifax
John William McDanielson, 49, Concretors Labourer, Bolton
Susan, wife [2nd], 45, Brighouse
Annie, Dau, 16, Worsted Winder, Halifax
Arthur, Son, 14, Worsted Doffer, Hfx
Joseph Aspinall, Stepson,25, Stone Miner,
Annie Aspinall, Stepdau, 19, Worsted Winder
Charles Aspinall, Stepson, 15, Worsted Doffer
Blache Aspinall, Stepdau, 12           [All Brighouse]

Hope that's a bit clearer,
Thanks again,
Gary

Yeah, I see where you are at now, and I'd certainly agree that it looks at though at least some of them were in Hx for 1870, given the appearance of the name in freebmd.

best advice is to change the title of your posting to "1871 Hx Census", as that is what you are interested in. It's likely to get ignored otherwise.

Regards,
Pauline

I have the 1871 census, and no joy with Edwin Alfred there either.  He appears on Annie's birth cert in 1884, so a guess to his y.o.b. would be 1858-1864.  Might therefore be on the '61, and a more remote chance if he was older, of appearing on the '51 - but that's doubtful.

Anyhow, Thanks again
