A previous thread on Rootschat referred to a gypsy woman who was given Crimea as a Christian name. During the 1850s of course.

Hi

I have a Kezia and so does my husband-apparently not too uncommon!  My sister in law thinks Kezia was a daughter of Job in the bible,

Wish I'd seen it before I had my daughters

Not traveller, but I have one instance of the name Osmond, and very useful too, since he left a paper trail between Wiltshire and Dorset in the 16th/17th centuries. Unfortunately he died at Blandford Forum before the 1731 fire, but luckily left a surviving will. Much more use than on the possibly gypsy part of my mother's tree where there are many Hephzibahs, just as difficult as John if you get a lot.

:)Hi, I'm new to this site and while I can't prove if my ggggrandad Henry Smith was a gypsy, his eldest brother was called Shallum, they were from Bubwith Yorkshire. ;)

Why not google "Bubwith+gypsy" and see what you get?

Hi Redrodger, I've tried the Bubwith site but couldn't find anything about gypsies, maybe it's just me who's a bit thick!

No Sue, to me this result suggest s gypsy families did not attract much attention in Bubwith.

Wouldn't want to be called "Bendigoe"... Interesting names yes, people will definitely remember you with an exotic name like that.

I suspect that might have a connection to the Australian gold rush, two towns involved I believe were Ballarat and Bendigo, rather like Crimea, Alma etc. mentioned earlier.
