I found Sarah on the 1851 census, with her grandparents (isn't it annoying when children "deliberately" visit other relatives on census night!) and presume this is where you got your information.

The OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837) is not much help on this one.  There are several MOSS marriages with a Stonesfield/Wotton connection, but none really around the right time (the nearest one before Sarah's birth is 1803).

I think you'll have to hope that someone has the Stonesfield PRs and can find Sarah's baptism for you.

Hi both  :)

Janet, Sarah's own marriage cert would give her father's name & occupation.  I assume you don;t have this yet?

In 1841 (did you mean 1841 Pennie?) she is with her grandparents. HO107/890/14/10/15

There is only one MOSS family in Stonesfield in that census.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Harriot Moss - 60 - Y

Henry Moss might be a clue - no proof of course that he's a brother of Sarah, but he might be.

In 1851 Henry, aged 11, is living as a son of Jane Berry, 32 (married, but head of household) in Handborough, Oxon.  Others in the family are Jane's daughter Mary Ann Moss, 9, son William Moss, 7, and daughter Elizabeth Berry, 2.  All except young Elizabeth (b Handborough) are listed as born in Stonesfield.

HO107/1731 folio 19 p5

Edited to add: this makes Jane look rather young to be Sarah Moss' mother, though not impossible I suppose.

Hi Janet

Relationships are not given in the 1841 census, so it's impossible to tell from that entry whether he was a son or grandson of Timothy and Harriot.

Like Arranroots said, the most reliable way to find out Sarah's father is to buy her marriage cert:

Marriages Dec 1852
AUSTIN  Eliza
MOSS  Sarah
PAXFORD    Henry

WARD William
Woodstock  vol. 3a  pg. 1003

Otherwise, if you're within reasonable distance of an LDS centre, you can ask them to order the Stonesfield parish records on microfilm so you can search for her birth/marriage there - I believe there's a small charge.
