WILLIAM HENRY TYSON (BS) Born France 1831-3
« on: Friday 16 June 06 13:50 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace one of my ancestors a William Henry TYSON, where on the 1881 UK census  it states BS born France c 1831. Does BS mean that he was a British Citizen (i.e. born of British parents) or that he was French born and became naturalised. I have also noticed that in Feb of this year on the Ancenstry site someone has information on a William Henry Tyson born Calais 1833 and died Salford 1888. This may well be the same one as the 1881 census shows William with Martha and their daughter Mary Jane from whom my wife's family is descended around Salford. She married into the Hodson (sometimes mis-spelt Hodgson) family

Can anyone help ?

Hi Ian,

Welcome to RootsChat  8)

BS is short for British Subject.

The William born Calais ca. 1833 is on the 1861 census with a wife named Kate (age 20, born Ormskirk. I can't trace her on later census returns). He's a blacksmith. I can't see your William in 1881 at first sight. Does the occupation match?

OK, have found your family in 1881. By 1891, Martha is indeed a widow, in Salford, so the 1881 death is defo a possible.
Do you have the 1891 details? Would you like them?

Do you know when Martha and William married? We'd have to find the date of marriage, and a death for Kate, to check if both Williams you mention can be one and the same man.

Hi Tanja

Firstly thanks very much for your help - I have had more progress on this today than in the last 2 months. The 1881 census at 28 Wood Street, Salford gave Wm Hry Tyson (born France 1831) fustian cutter, Martha (wife aslo a fustian cutter) , and children Ada, Martha, S (son), Wlt (son), Emily & MARY JANE (who married James Hodson and I have this marriage cert dated 1882 Salford quoting William Henry Tyson as her father a fustian cutter born France) . It is strange that the 1871 census shows b New York, USA & that William was a striker (blacksmith ?) with wife Kate ?

James Hodson whom William's daughter married was also in a blacksmith's family.

I would love the 1891 census & 1871 if poss details please.

The only marraige I have come across around the right era for a William Henry Tyson & a Martha is at Heaton Norris, Stockport (Sept Q 1861) but haven't yet investigted this - It isn't too far from Salford 10 miles or so

Also who was Kate on the 1871 census - if my marriage is right this makes it very odd becasue the children appear to be the right ones in 1871

Sorry Tanya I got confused - you mention a Kate on the 1861 census so it is possible she died prior to Willima's marriage to Martha (who also on the 1881 census was from Liverpool not far from Ormskirk)   Could they have divorced or Kate died.

I am trying to find out if William was indeed French or English.  His daughter Mary Jane apparently form family infomation converted from catholic to Protestant.

William must then have come to England between 1831/3 and 1861

Hi Tanja

I have just had another thought

Mary Jane Tyson's marriage to James Hod(g)son on 29/05/1882 (St Simons Church,Salford) does not state the William is deceased.

This is the most intereting side of my family. Mary Jane & James in 1901 had a Benjamin Hodson (brother & blacksmith) residing with them.

On the 1881 census the only Benjamin Hodson I could find in Salford was in Strangeways prison (right near Salford) convicted of larceny and there were also other Hodsons in the Salford Union workhouse at hat time. regrettably Hodson was a common name there though

Martha Tyson, head, wid, 57, b. Lancs Liverpool

Emily, dau, s, 21, (can't read occupation), b. Salford
Charles Brandon, grandson, s, 14, Errand boy, b. Manchester
Martin Mc Mahon, lodger, s, General Warehouseman, b. Ireland

Does Mary J's marriage cert really state her father's birth place? This isn't something usual  ???

Have you made contact with the person who posted on the ancestry board?

If this William married to Kate is yours, then we don't know which children are Martha's and which may be Kate's, do we? A birth cert for Mary J would certainly be useful.
