Farming around Whittlesey
« on: Saturday 17 June 06 10:11 BST (UK) »
hi,
I am researching the HART family, who lived and worked around the WHITTLESEY area. It appears they were heavily into farming in the 1700-1950 period. Does anyone have any info on farm names etc.  I know it is a shot in the dark, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

thanks. Dave Hart

Hi dave

A member "behindthefrogs" put me on to this website which is of trade/town directories online. You can search Cambridgeshire Whittlesey / Whittlesea region for the name HART or read the intro paragraphs on the town which has some intersting info on the farming and area including lord of manor etc. If your ancestors are not actually listed in a directory, the major farms are ususally listed under gentry and clergy beside the names of the resident lord or farm manager.

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

These directories are also great for locating ancestors in the trades.

Currently there is:

Bassenhally Farm
Manor Farm
Two Barns Farm

Nearby (nearer Coates) are:
Bank Farm
Park Farm

Hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay in replying, problems with the computer. If you could ask i would be very grateful. My grandad was a farmer, and i have a few bits and pieces on other ancestors, but not a great deal of detail. I shall give you my direct e-mail if that would be easier..... davehart38@hotmail.com

Cheers for now,

Andrew,

I know it has been a while..........1 year................. But do you have any more info on BASSENHALLY farm. I have a postcard sent to my grandfather in 1914 while he was in the war.
The message says........."all the best from all from BASSENHALLY "
I was wondering if I could find out who it was from..........

Hi Dave,

Sorry, this isnt part of my research, I was just reading a map i'm afraid!

My advice though, would be to have a look at the 1901 census for Whittlesey and see who is noted as living/working there.

That would hopefully provide a possible name.
