Thank you for that - as you say right father and children but it would have to be first wife as Elizabeth outlived William - interesting! Perhaps I should post for Elizabeth under her maiden name (Bartlett) and see who turns up.

Perhaps he had 3 wives.  Jane is 25 years younger than William.

Comparing this with the 1851 census which shows William age 46 and wife Elizabeth age 38, I think William's age should probably be 35 and that Jane is probably his first wife.  Elizabeth is with him in 1851 and was still alive in 1891 - she is shown as a widow in 1861.  I therefore suspect that Jane is wife number one and died sometime before 1851.  I have not been able to find a marriage for William and Elizabeth but it looks as if that is probably because I had assumed they married before George was born in 1837.

I think I need to look for an unmarried Elizabeth under her maiden name of Bartlett in 1841 and then try and find a marriage for William Hayward and Elizabeth Bartlett sometime between 1841 and 1851.

Thanks for your help - it has given me a whole new view of the situation!

I have found a marriage for William Hayward and Elizabeth Booth in 1842 so perhaps Jane died and William married Elizabeth Booth nee Bartlett?????

I wonder if there is an Elizabeth Booth born age 28 born Godmersham in the 1841 census?

Hi Gill,
I think Bearcat's entry from the 1841 census has totally confused you, the following entry from a few pages on should clear things up.

1841 HO107 477-11 folio 28 page 7:Warrener House, Brabourne
William Hayward age 30 ag lab
Elizabeth age 25
Harriet age 6
Eliza age 2
N K age 1 week (female, so could be Ellen)
all born in county

It looks to me as though little George and Stephen were staying with Grandad William age 55, and possibly Auntie Jane age 30, as their mother Elizabeth had just given birth to a new addition to the family.

So you can probably forget about looking for another wife for your William, but with Harriet shown on the 1841 census age 6, the marriage may well have taken place a little earlier than you thought.

Hope this helps with the research,
xx Carol

These entries from the 1851 census should help as well:
ref HO107 1622 folio 195 page 10: Broad Oak, Brabourne
William Hayward head widower age 69 ag lab born Brabourne
Jane Hayward dau un age 40 lab daugh born Brabourne
Mary Rolfe lodger widow age 74 receiving relief ag lab born Brabourne

HO107 1622 folio 197 page 14: Brabourne
Harriet Hayward serv un age 15 house servant born Brabourne

So it does look as though William's father was also called William, but that he was a widower in 1841.
