Hi, J.k...
Make sure that your spell check is turned on as it will find your word sappers as it doesn't recognise it...  ;D  J.J.
Also found this as I wondered what sappers were...:
Sappers and Miners - these are soldiers of the Royal Engineers - men experienced in excavations (saps are trenches) and construction.
sapper - a military engineer who lays or detects and disarms mines
sapper - a military engineer who does sapping (digging trenches or undermining fortifications)

Thanks again JJ.
William and Martha Bastard are the brother-in-law and sister of my main Illman line,so its going alittle sideways for me.But I was filling in gaps and could not find them in the English 1841 census.
Martha came from the Medway towns and William Devon,he must have met her while based in Gillingham.
I think he was in the Sappers and Miners.
When they returned to England William,William came out of the Amy and went back to his farm in Devon.
When Martha died he married her sister Jane!
     Regards Jean.
