Hi Elizabeth
The name Carney is in my family, though it changes each time it re-appears in a census.  Variations include: Cairnie (my mother's maiden name) Kearney, and Karney.  My mother attended St John's Lawside but I don't know which (Catholic) primary school.  Finlay Cairnie, my grandfather, has the surname Kearney on his birth cert.    He was one of 6 sons, Charles, John, Patrick, Stephen and Hugh. I've traced 4 generations of Carnie/Carney etc who lived and died in Dundee.  James Kearney c 1790, we think came over from Tyrone.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your reply, my grandmothers name was Carney but as you say sometime Carnie and various other spellings of the name.

This is the marriage of my gran and grandfather in Dundee in 1903, I havent got back far when I found they all came from Ireland.  I don't know if they are connected in anyway with your family or not, maybe you can let my know.

Hello Bambie,

I don't know if my grandfather is any relative of your Ferguson's, they lived in Dundee.

All I know is in the 1881 census the Ferguson's lived at 147 Scouringburn Dundee.

There was:-
John Ferguson aged 44 who came from Ireland
Elizabeth Ferguson aged 36 who also came from Ireland (Maiden name Soloman)
Catherine Ferguson daugter aged 8
John Ferguson son aged 11 months
Marsella Ferguson daughter aged 6 (The name Marsella is Mueella on census)
Thomas Ferguson aged 11 months

I don't know if this helps any.

Elizabeth

thanks for your reply elizabeth - gosh I do not know - for when my mum died I got her book of notes and addresses
wrote to everyone (some I did not know and this ferguson was one of them) - anyway she was in her 80 and wrote back to me - and I found out she was a cousin of my mum - then tried to get info of her - know that they were the family of Johnston's in dundee and one of the daughters married a cairn (or something) whom married a ferguson - but poor thing must have died - as I never heard from her again - so sorry wish I could trace them but after 1901 very hard - kind regards bambie

Hi Bambie,

Just thought I would let you know the two children aged 11 months in the 1881 census above John Ferguson and Thomas Ferguson died within a year to a year and a half after birth.  My grandfather also called Thomas Ferguson was born later in 1881 after the death of the twins.

This Thomas Ferguson married Mary Carney on 27th July 1903 in Dundee.
Her parents were called John Carney and Mary nee Kennedy.

I don't know if any of this will relate to your Carnie-Caney family!!

hi elizabeth - thank you for your reply.
my mothers maiden name was brown (my grandad george brown) but on my mothers - mother side of the family - was Johnstone - were I got the 1881 census for them - they Thomas Johnston and his wife elizabeth Cullen (onecame from Berwichshire and the other guernsey channel islands) and traced them to edinburgh and then to dundee.
When I found my late mum's address book I wrote to everyone and one was called Mrs Margaret Ferguson she lived in Brechin Angus scotland - her own name caird (so one of the johnston was a ancestor of her (she was in her 80)
and she married a ferguson - sorry about the confusion - thought with your lot being in dundee might be connected to the family kind regards margaret
