DOVER Family
« on: Friday 23 June 06 13:40 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I am researching Dovers from Westmorland:

William Dover married Hannah Lamb 26 Jan 1772 St Michael's Appleby.

Their children:
Peggy bap 1773 St M
William bap 1774 St M marr Margaret Carlton
Daniel bap1778 St M died 1779
Matthew bap1780
Nancy bap 1782 St M
Thomas bap1785 St M
Hannah bap1787 St M born 22/11/1785 marr Lancelot Langhorn
Jane died 1778 age 7yrs
James bap1792 St M marr Jane Smith
Daniel bap1795 St M
Mary ?

I have marriages & desendents for three of the children but not the others. The family were living in Hilton according to the 1787 census. The family were paupers as this is marked against Hannah's baptism in 1787 when she was 2 yrs old.

It is possible that William is the son of William Dover of Brough under Stainmore, who had two other sons: Daniel & Donkin.

Anyone else researching this family?

A slow Sunday and I'm just going through older rootschat posts.

I have a marriage licence for Donkin Dover.  (What were the parents thinking?).  Do you want the details?
regards
Deborah

Here it is:

18 April 1770
groom: Donkin Dover, marks, miner of Helton, p Bongate
bride: Margaret Wilkinson, do
bondsmand: Tho, Wilkinson, yeoman, do
marriage to take place at Bongate

I was looking for the William Dover/Hannah Lamb marriage (no joy) but I recognised this name from another thread.
regards
Deborah

I do not know if this links to your Dover family, but are you aware of the Westmoreland rape case? (I am researching Lowis family in Shap and came across this sad sad story.) It involves a Jane Dover and Elizabeth Dover daughters of Matthew Dover in 1846.

I have typed up the newspaper articles on my blog which you can find by googling "Garnetts from Orton". It is under Newspaper Articles Shap.

Hope it does not distress anyone too much. Be warned I found it very unsettling.

Hello Little Wren,

A sad story indeed!

I cannot find a connection to my Dovers, but there were Matthews in the family. My gggg grandmother Hannah Dover had an elder brother Matthew b1780 Hilton. I'm sure there's a connection somewhere. I'll do some digging.

Thanks for the link.

Regards,

Gillian
