Edaville, Marine Parade, Clacton
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 14:05 BST (UK) »
In the hope that it is still there (!), is there a chance that someone with a digital camera - and living in the area - would be able to photograph 'Edaville', Marine Parade, Clacton, a property belonging to but not occupied by an ancestor of mine?

In the 1901 Census, the house is recorded in the following way:

(167)  No 2 Marine Parade

(168)  No 3 Eagle Crescent

           No 4 Eagle Crescent

(169)   Edaville

(170)   No 5 Marine Parade

(171)   Earlsmead

etc. etc.

Many thanks for any help that can be offered.

I know that this reply won't exactly answer your question but if you log on to Essex Record Office (just type SEAX into your search engine and it should be the first hit you get), log on as a guest and enter 'Edaville' into the search box. You should get 2 results. They don't refer to photos but you may be interested in what they offer.

Thanks very much indeed! As you say, it doesn't exactly answer my question but at least I know that the property still exists.

I'm grateful for your help.

Best wishes

I'm sorry - I may have unwittingly misled you. I think that catalogue reference means only that they have planning documents at Essex Record Office. I suspect it does not necessarily mean that the property still exists - though i hope it does.

Thanks for your message - in fact, by following your advice, I came across what looks like two Planning Applications relating to the house in question!

Incidentally, I am also interested in another property on Marine Parade in Clacton - this one is called 'Copeleigh'.  I haven't applied for a copy of the 1901 Census page that includes this property (although I did an Address Check and had a positive response) but I guess it will not have been too far away from 'Edaville'.

So, if anyone in the vicinity has the use of a digital camera, I would be delighted to have photos of both properties.

Fingers crossed!

Best wishes and renewed thanks.

Further to my recent message, Clincher was right to be cautious.

I contacted the Essex Archive and someone there gave me some helpful hints on how to get more information.

It seems that the Building Plans were submitted in 1921.

So, I'm not sure if either 'Edaville' or 'Copeleigh' still exist in Marine Parade, Clacton.

If anyone can confirm one way or the other, I would be very grateful.
