In Memory of

Rifleman H L FOOT

107, 3rd Bn., Rifle Brigade

who died

on 24 April 1915

Remembered with honour

CHAPELLE-D'ARMENTIERES OLD MILITARY CEMETERY

La Chapelle d'Armentieres is a village and commune in the Departement of the Nord. The village was in British hands from October 1914 until the fall of Armentieres on the 10th April 1918, and it was retaken on the following October. During the British occupation it was very close to the front line, and the cemeteries which it contains are those made by fighting units and field ambulances in the earlier days of trench warefare.

Chapelle d'Armentieres Old Military Cemetery is on the North side of the main road to Armentieres, 136 metres West of the Church. It was begun in October 1914 by units of the 6th Division, and used until October 1915. It contains the grraves of 103 soldiers from the united Kingdom, 3 of whom are unidentified.

The old military cemetery covers an area of 1,074 square metres. It is enclosed by a rubble wall.

The register records particulars of 103 war dead buried or commemorated in this cemetery.

Hi Pauline,
My apologies for being amiss and not seeing this thread. I am afraid that I am not going to be able to be the most helpful here as the 3rd Rifle Brigade's War Diary for this period is a little lean and I do not have his service records on my database.

On the 15/4/15 the Battalion was relieved by the Royal Fusiliers and billeted in Chaple D' Armentieres.
From the 16/4/15 to 20/4/15 they remained billeted in Chaple D'Armentieres.
On the night of the 20/4/15 the Battalion relieved the Royal Fusiliers in trenches.
21/4/15 to 26/4/15 they remained in trenches.
Casualties
21/4/15 Lieut. A.E.P. Ellis wounded.
22/4/15 2 other ranks wounded.
23/4/15 1 other rank wounded.
24/4/15 4 other ranks killed and 11 wounded.
26/4/15 1 other rank killed and 3 wounded.
Battalion relieved by Royal Fusiliers and billeted in Chaple D'armentieres.

Unfortunately the regular battalions of the Rifle Brigade's War Diaries are not as well written with regard to detail and casualties as the service battalions.
If you would like a copy of the War Diary let me know and I will e-mail it to you.
