1901 Leftovers: Web site to close?
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 21:36 BST (UK) »
I have just been to  http://4trudy.co.uk/census/  (for the 1901 census leftovers) and this is the message on the page:-

Unfortunately I am no longer able to maintain this site. If you, or someone you know has the time, interest and knowledge to take over, please get in touch at
Moderator Comment: Email Address Removed to avoid Spamming - use a Personal Message to contact this user
The site has two free yahoo email addresses, a mailing list with over 300 members. There is also a domain name which you can take over free of charge. All I ask is that you keep the concept of the site, ie. that transcribers are linked to their own transcriptions enabling others to get in touch with them, other than that feel free to change anything you want to, to make this site your own.

Does anyone know if it has been "taken over"? What will happen to all this work if nobody does?

Thankyou trystan.

I'm happy that rrotschat are trying to do it. It would have been such a shame to loose all this info.

Do we still send things in or wait till it's been sorted?

Thanks

Yes delighted to say that RootsChat is taking on the 1901 leftovers site - we are still in the process of transfer - but we will keep you posted!

Trystan and Sarah (the RootsChat admins) commented "We are really
excited to have the opportunity to carry on this great work that Trudy and all of the contributors have done. It would have been such a great loss to have seen it go, and we hope that with all your help we can help the project keep on growing. Thank you Trudy!"

Trystan, do you have any news on the progress of the 1901 Leftovers site ?

I have just visited:
http://1901census.rootschat.com/
but many of the links don't work, and when I tried a surname search, the process just seemed to 'hang' forever...

Is it an abandoned project ?

Steve,

Indeed, many of the links no longer work on there, and the project is 'on hold', but not abandoned.

If you try a Person Search, say for John Jones, aged 5, age range 10 years it will give  a result, so it does still work.

We are looking to modify the way that it works so that:

1) People's email addresses are protected
2) Data can be entered more automatically

I'd not come across this site before.  Can someone explain what it was/will be about?
