Hi Dolly ...

Not good news - according to the index for the Handborough PRs, the earliest WOODWARD baptism in the parish was in 1689 (Thomas, s. Anthony).

I also checked the actual transcripts for 1640 +/- 5 years (as the index is not always infallible!), but nothing.

I had a quick look for WOODWARD marriages on the OFHS's Marriage Index for 1600/40 - they are in Fulbrook, Burford, Clifton Hampden, Oxford and Banbury.  If you think any of these would be helpful, let me know.

Hi Pennie,

I was just telling Toby that I think the heat must have got to me today.  I really don't know where I got C1640 from.  I am looking at Richard Woodward C1730 Hanborough.

Would you mind checking this date for me?  So sorry for wasting your time with my error.

Thanks

Dolly

Hi Dolly ...

No problem.  Know what you mean about the heat - we went out this evening, and the best bit was to and from in the car with the air conditioning on full!

I still can't find any record of Richard WOODWARD's baptism c1730 in Handborough.  The nearest baptism is of a John WOODWARD in 1735, s. James and Mary.

Just wondered if you had come across Colin Worley's website (www.worley.org.uk) - he has a lot of WOODWARDs listed, including a Richard (unfortunately, no date/place of birth!), s. James WOODWARD and Mary WALKER, and marrying Mary HORN in 1758.

The only marriage of a James WOODWARD at Handborough is in 1758, but there is this one - for a Jacob - in 1728:

19 DEC 1728 - Jacob WOODWARD to Mary WALKER

I have a feeling I may had muddied the waters even more!

Hi Pennie,

Thanks for searching for Richard for me, I guess he was born C1730 as it seems likely that John was his brother.

No, I haven't seen Colin Worley's website, thanks for the link, will take a look later.

I wonder if James was Jacob and his name just got mistranscribed/heard?  Seems funny they were both married to Mary WALKER.  ???

Thanks again,

Dolly
