GOLDSMITH - Hellingly/Rudgwick PR
« on: Sunday 02 July 06 14:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone could check the Hellingly or Rudgwick PR for a marriage between a John Goldsmith and a Ruth ?? between I'd say 1835 and 1841 as I am trying to find Ruth's maiden name?  Nothing is coming up on the IGI or BMD records.  The 1851 Census shows the following (which is why I ask for Hellingly or Rudgwick) :-

Walter is my gg grandfather.

I'd also be grateful for a check of the birth records for Hellingly for John's birth c1819 in case his first name wasn't John?

Thanks for any help

Alex

Hi Alex,

I couldn't find a Goldsmith marriage to a Ruth in the Sussex Marriage Index (pre Sept 1837), but they were in Hellingly in 1841.  So it seems likely they married between September 1837 and June 1841.  Walter was 1 in June 1841:

HO107/1114/11 Schedule 13 Page 18
In the brick kiln area, Hellingly

John Goldsmith, 23, Brick Maker
Ruth do, 22
Walter do, 1

All born in Sussex

This couple were living nearby (Schedule 13 Page 17):

George Goldsmith, 36, Brick Maker
Louisa do, 33

Both born in Sussex

Thanks for the info, of course they may not have married at all, not the first time in my lot!

Thanks for the lookup

Hi Alex,
From the Rudgwick pr's (I checked 1816-1822) there are two Ruth's baptised
1.  Ruth d/o Thomas & Ann HOAD, farmer.  7/4/1816
2.  Ruth d/o Richard & Sophia REEVES, miller.  22/8/1818

I checked the index to match up a marriage between Reeves or Hoad to Goldsmith, Q3 & Q4 1837, all quarters 1838, 1839 & 1840 but without any luck  :(  You can check yourself here.

Thanks Jane, I'll do some digging around those names as well, it's all a bit of a mystery!

Cheers
