How do I find out what medals my Grandfather "won"
« on: Sunday 02 July 06 23:14 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather served in the battle of Arnhem and "won" medals for his service.  How do I find out what medals he "won" and if possible how he "won" them.  I have only been researching my family for 6 months and have not as yet "delved" into military history.

I have one rellie in the Royal Navy in 1861 and another listed as a pensioner aged 31 in 1851.  Not sure where to go from here.

Any advise gratefully received.

Many thanks

you don't want the national archives site for your WW2 relative , they don't hold the records

you need to request his service records from

Army Personnel Centre
HQ Secretariat
Historical Disclosure
Mail Point 400
Kentigern House
65, Brown Street
Glasgow
G2 8EX

check out this link for the full details as to how to go about it

Thanks Chris

The link didn't work but I found it under

http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/

I am on AOL and it sometimes doesn't find links unless you type most of it in and then search!

They do have Royal navy seamans records on National Archives thought it may helpwith the 1861 research

I have applied for my late father-in-law's medals from WWII.  It entailed sending a letter from his widow (next of kin) and waiting...

About 9 months to a year.

I have not as yet sent for his service record from Glasgow, but it should make entertaining reading - he had a checkered career!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
