Occupation or rank" What is Carman"
« on: Monday 03 July 06 14:44 BST (UK) »
Have just received copy of marriage certificate from 1896.  Father's occupation of the bride listed as Carman.  Would this be car man, but i did not think motor vehicles were called "cars" back then. Any ideas?

Hiya Nelle,

I wonder if your ancestor worked on tramcars. The other possibliity is horse drawn vehicles used for carrying passengers. They were not horse drawn trams but open wagons with seats. They were known as cars in Ireland. Maybe the same term was used in England.

All the Best, Christopher

Thanks for the ideas, they sound feasible to me.
