Manchester 1860s Who was this man ?
« on: Wednesday 05 July 06 16:24 BST (UK) »
In June 1866,my gggrandma,Sarah Howarth/Holt  was transferred from Manchester Workhouse to Prestwich asylum.
The name of her nearest relative is given as Father Jaberg? Brierley at Mrs Nash's ,Factory St ,Angel St,Manchester.
He's obviously not her dad.Can anybody tell me from ?1861 or 1871 census records if he's a priest perhaps?
I also can't find Sarah, born Mar 1840 in Rochdale on the census after1851 either. She may be in Hollingworth Workhouse in 1861,but then vanishes .She seems to have called herself Holt when living in Manchester.Occupation given as charwoman. She was epileptic,so presumably in and out of hospital/workhouse.
I can't find her dying up till 1871,will have to check later dates.
I've attached copy of Father Brierley's name ,perhaps somebody can decipher it.
Thanks Sue

Do you know Sarah's parents names? I wondered if she was born Brierley and then if her mother married or remarried changed her name?

Thanks for the name I don't know my old Testament !
Sarah's parents were Mary(Sladen) and John Howarth.John had died sometime during 1850s but Mary and the rest of her children are living in Rochdale in 1861.In 1868 Mary married John Whitworth who died shortly afterwards and in 1871 she has Sarah's 4 year old daughter Mary Ann living with her in Rochdale. They are both still there in 1881 but no Sarah Howarth.

Jabez Brierley is unmarried and living with his parents in Mayfield, Staffordshire, in 1871.
He's a Cotton Mill Worker.

Thanks Prue
I can't see any kind of connection between them .I thought Father Brierley might be something to do with St Michael's church at the end of Angel St.I haven't found out who the clergy were but it and its plague burial grounds are interesting .
