Date & Restore please - 29th Reg.
« on: Thursday 06 July 06 12:31 BST (UK) »
Hi hope someone can help me out.

This is a photograph of my GG grandfather Richard Gibbons.  The info I have is he was in the 29th Reg (Worc) born 1820 Sapperton Glos and died around 1896 in Wickwar Glos.

Could someone help date this photograph and possibly restore/Color?

Would be grateful for any input or suggestions.  Am away later for a few days, but look forward to any replies on my return.

Many thanks

Cas

Here is my version of a clean-up!.
I would guess the 1880's and maybe the Buffs?? but I will leave the dating of the pic to the experts.

Hi Cas  :)

I can't see alot of information that will help me to date this photo, in terms of the type of photograph it is...it looks like it has been overpainted, as well as being cut out to fit into the album, so alot of info about the surface of the photo and the mount it was on has been lost.

The military buffs on the Armed Forces board will probably be able to give you an idea of a date range, based on his uniform and medals, etc...maybe post the picture there?

If you suspect this to be a man born about 1820, then it would date to the 1860s, because I don't think he looks much older than mid-40s.

Many thanks to all for your work and effort.  I will post on the armed forces board to see if they can shed light on any more info regarding the uniform.

Thanks again

Cas

Just have to tell you all....

I posted on the armed forces board as some of you suggested and member Neil gave me an excellent link to the 29th Reg. Museum.  Contacted them and had a quick reply from a volunteer researcher!!!

They actually hold his medals from both Sikh wars and also long and Good Conduct medals.  They have requested that I send a copy of the photo so that it can be displayed with them, I am soooo chuffed.

They have given me a very good overview of his 21yrs spent with the 29th. He was badly wounded in the first Sikh War and went on to fight in both major battles of the second.  He spent a total of 13yrs 9mths in the East Indies ( no wonder I could not find him in 1841/51)

Thanks again for the restoration and advice folks

Cas  :)  :)  :)
