alberta around 1901
« on: Thursday 06 July 06 13:47 BST (UK) »
My relatives lived in the Glengarry district. Can anyone tell me where this was? Also I am sure they had a land grant. They arrived in alberta  in 1900.
Name Thomas Williams-- age around 25.
Thank you.

Both Edmonton and Calgary have Glengarry Districts but I believe the Calgary one is recent and so the most likely place is North West of Edmonton now part of the city.

I think I might be wrong about Calgary because Glengarry seems to be a district in the 1911 census.  Also its Elementary School had its golden jubilee in 1970.

The Glengarry district of Calgary was named after a ranch of that name which was owned by Thomas E Jackson, which in turn was named after Glengarry County in Ontario.  This county was originally populated by Scottish Highlanders.

HI there

go to this site

http://www.agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca/1901census/

search for Thomas Williams and you will find him and his wife Lucie in Glengarry - there is a map link on this page so you can see roughly where Glengarry is in Alberta.

If you need help with this family before or after 1900 let us know -  there may be other information out there that would be of interest.

Thank you very much.
Thomas Williams arrived in Alberta around 1900. I have the family on the 1911 census. I had difficulty accessing the land grant site. Would like to know how many acres he was given.
Any other post 1900 information would be most welcome!

Hello

here is the family in 1906 - select pages 16 and 17 then select view without the plug in  - then look on page 17 for Thomas and Lucie and two children - there are other Williams on page 16 and 17  - perhaps they are family?

It looks like maybe their land was part of the railway land so take a look here for the land grant info

Also check out this one

NW part of Section 26, Township 55, Range 26, Meridian W4
assigned to Thomas Williams (Liber 124,  which means that the homestead was final during April 27, 1899 - July 17, 1899  so was likely applied for in about 1894 or so)

You can also take a look here for the homestead - you can even order the homestead papers if you are interested in seeing them
