Norwich Mercury Dec 8 1821 - ROBBERIES cont-
« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 20:17 BST (UK) »
A few nights since the church of Colney was entered by taking a square of glass out of the window and the chest opened which contained the clergy-men's surplice, which they threw on the floor, and left the church without taking anything away.
The house of Mr Jonas WALPOLE, of Long Stratton, was broken open on Friday night. Mrs Walpole, hearing a noise, made her appearance among the thieves armed with a blunderbuss, upon which they immediately decamped, taking with them some boxes of no value.
On Thursday se'nnight or early on Friday morning the roof of the chancel of Hellesdon church was stripped of its lead. It is supposed that it was conveyed away by a cart, as the tracks of cart wheels were observed up to the church.
On Friday night or early on Saturday morning some person broke open the stable of Mr Matthew CATCHPOLE, of Cossey, and stole thereout a dark brown gig mare, his property.
We last week recorded the apprehension of five persons, on suspicion of being concerned in several burglaries lately committed. In consequence of information given to Stevenson, by Mr ALURED, of Pulham, whose house was lately robbed of goods to a considerable amount, he went to the house of the prisoner WALKER, accompanied by Messrs Alured and Creasy, and apprehended him in bed. Several stolen articles were found in his possession. Upon his examination it has appeared that he (Walker), in company with the four prisoners, committed the robbery at Mr Alured's house, and that they sold the goods to the prisoner, WEBSTER; also the robbery at Mr Jas AUSTIN's at Wattlefield; Mr WRIGHT's of Senfield; and during the winter of last year, at Mr PITT's of Scole; that they stole a sheep from Mr SOUTHWELL's pasture at Lakenham, and committed a burglary at Flordon. It has also appeared that a plan was laid by one of the prisoners, who was formerly a servant of E WODEHOUSE, Esq of robbing !
that gentleman's house of his plate. Webster was committed (by T B Evans & B Kittmer, Esqs) as a receiver, on Tuesday; Walker, for the robbery at Sinfield, on the same day; and the other prisoners, for Mr Alured's and Mr Austin's robberies, on Friday. We understand, however, that the Magistrates intend to make further enquiries, for the purpose of more fully investigating the burglaries.
