Whilst looking for possible parents of my great grandfather James Frank Maynard, I found this German family in London in 1901 -

Frank Mannhardt bc1872 Islington
Marie Mannhardt bc1876 Germany
Emma Mannhardt bc1900 Germany
Ida Mannhardt bc1868 Aut German Subject

Could they have anglicized their surname around the time of the First World War? Is there a way of tracing this family back, as I can't find them in any other census.

They were very likely interred. Have a look at www.feefhs.org/uk/frgagfhs.html which is the website of the Anglo-German Family History Scciety of London, which has some records of German-born people in the UK at the outbreak of WW1.

Sorry, that should read interned!!!
In fact, they were interned in camps on the Isle of Man, and most of them were deported at the end of the war.

I can't see them in earlier censuses, so guess they came over from Germany 1891-1901.  (Frank's birthplace is Germany on the original image, not Islington.)  He married in England, so the cert would give his father's name, which would help in trying to work backwards:

I would imagine Marie Young/Yung is the same person, and her surname is originally JUNG, which is pronounced "Yung."
