lost Royal Navy ship Arroganic
« on: Tuesday 11 July 06 03:05 BST (UK) »
Now I have the names and dates it is time to put some flesh on the bones so to speak. According to the 1861 census GGgrandfather Henry Day b1842 Twickenham was 2nd class able bodied seaman on the ship Arroganic . He then joined the London Fire Brigade July 27 1863 -and left due to ill heath Jan 31 1874.
1881 Census finds him a fireman at Madame Tussards .
Where can I find info on the Arroganic and his Navy record ?  I'm stuck .

Are you sure that "Arroganic" was a Royal Navy rather than a merchant navy ship?  She doesn't seem to figure in any of the standard lists of RN ships.  There are a series of ships called "Arrogant".  Can you quote your source precisely please.

Yep, Commodore William Edmonstone is on the front page of this ships census return, and he was in command of the Arrogant from 23rd August 1859 until 6th December 1862.

Theres also a log at the same site as listed on the link above whic is an extract of the Arrogants log book (http://home.wxs.nl/~pdavis/Log_Arrogant.htm)

If you visit the National Maritime Museum site (http://www.nmm.ac.uk/cgi-bin/empower?DB=prints_index99) and use Arrogant in the search, there are a couple of drawings of the ship from 1850. They are listed as HMS Arrogant in a following wind, Nov 17 1850 and HMS Arrogant under easy sail, 1850.
