Hi Carol,

Unfortunately, without knowing where in Canada they lived, you are unlikely to find them  :(

There is no national index for either the 61 or the 71 (not even on pay sites like Ancestry.ca).  A heads-of-household index is availalbe for 1871 Ontario (http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010803_e.html).  There is one John Attwood age 32, but that seems a bit too big of an age gap to be your guy.  There were also 2 John Atwoods, but both in their 20s.

I saw the 1881 US census entry that you must be working off of and noticed that Thomas and George are recorded as born in Canada - how did you find out it was Toronto?

As you probably have noticed, civil registration of BMDs didn't start until 1869, so that's not much help.  I did check the Ontario birth records 1869-1872 just in case they had a child between George and Caroline, who had perhaps died, but nothing came up.

Perhaps someone else knows of a Toronto index for 61 or 71 that could be checked?

Toronto city directories for the 1860s are available here

http://digitalcollections.torontopubliclibrary.ca:8000/WebZ/Authorize:sessionid=0

but I could find no Attwoods or Atwoods.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
