Fresh eyes needed!
« on: Tuesday 25 July 06 15:07 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm battling to figure out what the name is of the parish where my ancestor was born and would so appreciate any suggestions.
The rest of the sentence reads :

"That Sgt. Dd BARNES born in the parish of ??? the Town of Rofscommon in the County of Rofscommon was enlisted for the Corps at Cape Town in the Cape of Good Hope on the etc etc"

The statement of Service goes on to say that he served in the 21st Lt. Dr. from 1801 - 1817 and it seems that this regiment was mustered or put together in Ireland.  His death notice also states that he was born in Ireland so i'm assuming that the Rofscommon referred to above is the County in Ireland.

I have also posted this query under the Roscommon section but am hoping that some folks with super good eyes, who don't frequent that part of the board, might have a suggestion.

best wishes
Leanne

Hi Leanne

I have seen many documents upto about 1800 where the long ƒ is used for an s. Making it Rosscommon

I hope the clip for 1787 is clear to demonstrate this.

 Aughrim

because it looks as if the first three letters are Eug and the last three are ain - I thought it said Eugrain - could it be an old spelling or a mis-spelling?

Hi Vernon and others,

I was thinking too that it might well be old / or Gaelic spelling ... my ancestor was born in abt. 1778 - some time ago!

I've emailed a Roscommon Family History Society to ask their opinion .. hoping a local might have more insight.

Thanks for the input!

best wishes
