whittaker..Tullamore
« on: Friday 28 July 06 19:34 BST (UK) »
HI everyone,
I have just found out my gt gt granma's name was Eliza Whittaker, she was born abt 1846 in Tullamore. She left Ireland to come to Liverpool. She met and married John Mclennan in 1869, and had 9 children as far as I know.
Can someone help me find her. Which county is Tullamore in? Does anyone know of any Whittakers from that area?
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Red  :)

Hi Saddler and Pat,

I don't think the Whittaker in the Griffiths Valuation Index is the correct one I'm looking for. It could however be a relation. I would have thought Whittaker an unusual name in Ireland. I apologise if i'm wrong on that one!

On Eliza's wedding certificate, it gives her fathers name as James, he was a farmer. Maybe, Michael and James were brothers?

If they had moved, where is the next town they could have moved to? (!)

Thanks again,

Red   :)

Hi red.

The only James Whittaker in Offaly is as follows [see below] and
it is worth keeping in mind that marriage and birth/baptism were usually recorded in the spouse/mother parish, which may be an
adjacent or close parish.

Mike.

Whittaker, James
County:      Offaly/Kings
Parish:      Barr
Location:      Townparks
Town:                      Town of Birr
Address:                  Eden Street
Townson - Cartmel                      O'Malley - Askeaton, Ireland
Sadler - Dymock & Salford           Tomlinson - St Peters, Leeds

Hi Saddler,

Eliza and John were married in a Presbyterian church in Liverpool. Did they have such a thing in Ireland then? Would she, or could she have changed her religion? I would have presumed she would be Roman Catholic at birth.

Is the parish of Kilbride far from the parish of Barr. I don't have the district Eliza was born in, only that it was Tullamore. If not, it looks like Michael could have been James's brother, and James went to live in his wife's parish?

Thanks again for your time,

Red   :)

Hi Red:
Yep, they had Presbyterians in Ireland back then!
Another town in Offaly not terribly far from Tullamore is Edenderry. I did a little looking around and came up with Whittakers in that area. You may want to do some "googling" using variations and see what develops.
Here are some items:

http://www.curiousfox.com/history_Ire/clare.lasso
Looking for the family of Robert Baird b.1860, gardener to the Bishop of Clare at the Bishop's residence, Clarisford. He met and married Elizabeth Whittaker from Edenderry, Co. Offaly, who worked in the Bishop's household. They married on 8/3/1887 in Killaloe and had 8 children. One of these, Harriet May Baird married Emmanuel Victor Nelson in Liverpool in 1913 and were my husband's grandparents. Any info on any members of this family gratefully received. Sue

Week ending August 11, 1888

WHITTAKER***July 15 at the residence of her brother-in-law Robert SAUNDERSON, M.D. Edenderry, King's county, Alicia, eldest daughter of the late James WHITTAKER, Edenderry.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pat and Saddler,

thanks Pat for your latest info.

I have been talking to a friend, who has a special interest in Irish history. He made the suggestion that Whittaker originates from Norfolk, and that these Whittakers could have been transplants.

What do you think?
