Frederick Goucher Home Child
« on: Friday 13 February 04 20:07 GMT (UK) »
When I first became aware of the Home Children website on http://www.archives.ca/02/020110_e.html
I had a quick look, not really expecting to find anything. I was surprised to find the following:

GOUCHER , Frederick
Age: 16
Sex: M
Year of arrival: 1916
Microfilm reel: T-4815
Ship: SS Sicilian
Port of departure: Liverpool
Departure Date: 21 Apr 1916
Port of arrival: Quebec
Arrival Date: 2 May 1916
Party: Not Given
Destination: Various Locations

Now, as far as we know, Frederick does not connect to my husband's family, but I would like to know what happened to him. To date, I have not done much research on this Goucher, but would be interested to hear from anyone who does connect to him.
Regards,
Julie

The shipping image says he was going to J J (J G?) Whitfield, farmer, Post office, Somerset Manitoba
as a farm labourer.

Added: No connection to this family, just thought I would take a look.

This looks like him in 1916 census
11 MacDonald Manitoba
Abraham Whitfield 77 born England emigrated 1886 Farmer
Margaret Whitfield 60
James Jacob Whitfield 35
Isobell Whitfield 26
Fred Gutscher(looks like this on image) 16, Anglican, born England labourer

It says he emigrated 1900 but I think they have mixed that up with his birth date.

The Edward J. Goucher that Carol listed appears to be the son of Charles Goucher and Agnes Boyter according to a rather extensive family tree at Ancestry. Perhaps that will help with making a connection to your family.

I don't know if this is the same Frederick but there is a Frederick William Conford Goucher in the New Zealand electoral records for 1935, 1938 and 1946. He died in 1948 at the age of 48. I think you may want to pass on claiming him however as there is a 1928 newspaper article from the Evening Post that indicates this Frederick was "to 3 years reformative treatment on 5 charges of indecent assault" on boys at Pages Past.

awe...nobody speaks about the mental and physical abuse that may have been passed on to other generations...So many aspects of wrong from the darker corners of some Home children stories....
