It worked, I found it. But can't connect this side with of the family to my William Hotson. Going to try and run down this Hugh Hotson, he could be the one.
Again thanks so much for the help.

Just found out through the family. That William Hotson was a tailor when he lived in Scotland. Also his father was a tailor ( how they knew the occaption of William's father and not his name is beyond me ) He also had a brother that went to Canada after william did. Still looking for the father.
Did find Anges Ashcroft's ( William's wife ) Father in Canada. He also came Scotland.  If anyone has any informatiom on a John Ashcroft born ABT 1815, don't know where. His wife's name was possibly Margaret.
   Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Greylady

Try Rootsweb.com key in name William Hotson. You will find William under World Connect

Database. You can connect with the person who has this family in his tree.

Have you tried FamilySearch.org? William and his family are on 1880 United States Census

for Powhatten,Brown,Kansas. They have 6  children with them as well as Agnes's sister

Marg  age 62 yrs born Scotland.

In 1890 William is at Garfield.Oklahoma on the Census.

I'll have another search around and will be in touch if I come accross any thing else of

interest.

Good luck from Canada

Hi there,

Scotlands People shows no births for a William Hotson between 1818 and 1822 in Canonbie, only a Jane and 2 Johns.  I also cannot find him in a 'whole of Scotland' search on that site.  there are many reasons why this could be though - a/ not baptised at all, b/ not baptised in Church of Scotland, c/records mistranscribed or d/ date you have been given is incorrect.

Widening the search dates brings back 2 William Hotsons born in Canonbie, in 1801 and 1803, which is maybe a little early.  There is one in 1828 in Langholm, which is another close parish in Dumfriesshire.

Can I ask where the information of his date and place of birth was acquired from?  And also, does his age in the census records support his date of birth?

Cheers,
Clare
ELLIOT, CROZIER, HAY, AITCHISON, COWAN - Roxburghshire
BETT - Kinross-shire, Fife and Glasgow
CHAMBERS, BRUFF, WESTMACOTT - Glasgow
And many, many more...

Graylady
As with everyone else I have not found any documentary evidence of your William Hotson born 1820.  However . . .
All the other bits of information do fit a particular Hotson I know of.
As a rule the Hotsons were a Langholm family.
Alexander Hotson did marry Grizzel Nichol.  They married in 1803.
Alexander had a sister Mary who married James Beattie. a tailor.

Alexander and Grizzel had several children. I have a record of 12.
Their eldest William baptised in February 1803 was William.  "His son went to South Africa and later to Australia'
John baptised in 1810 married in 1842 in canonbie and went to Canada in 1853.
Walter baptised in 1813 married in Langholm and went to Harriston, Ontario.
Margaret born in 1816 married William Beattie 1846 in Langholm and went to Canada.
James Simeon baptised in 1817. He went to canad and married there.
A younger brother Alexander baptised in 1822 married in Canonbie and went to Canada in 1851.
The next and youngest son George was baptised in 1824, went to Canada in 1849 and married at Innerkip in 1851.

The information is from details a contact gave me.

No William apart from the eldest is noted.

Everthing else apparently fits.

Do let me know if this helps anymore.  Alexander and Grizzel's photographs are in a book written by. I think, a nephew  :)

Hi!  The Hotsons from Lanholm are MY Hotsons.
I do have a history and a family tree at home.  I'll find it and maybe I can help fill in some of the blanks.
