Looking for Hotson in Canonbie
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 20:12 BST (UK) »
Have been trying to find the parents of William Hotson born 15 Jan 1820 in Canonbie, Scotland. Have no luck at all. He went to Canada around 1850. He married Anges Ashcroft 1855 in Port Hope Canada, they had 11 children. Then went to the United States in 1875, settled in Missouri , Kansas the to Oklahoma. Was in the land rush of 1893 in Oklahoma. He died in 1906 in Hayward Oklahoma. We have looked and looked for his parents with no luck. Any help would be welcomed.
Fairly well sure the spelling is right on the name.
Have a letter written by an A.E. Hotson stating that he was the brother of William.
Also that the great-grandmother was Grizel Nichol who married Alexander Hotson their son William went to England and died there in 1866. Another dead end.
Other sons went to Canada. But can't make the connection between this William and them.
Also they are cousins to the Beattie's. One of Williams sons is named William Beattie Hotson.
Alexander and Grizel's daughter married a William Beattie. The mystery thickens.
Still stumped, but not giving up.

Had a look http://www.familysearch.org

Also there is a birth for Jane Hotson 17 dec 1870 Egremont Grey Ontario parents William Hotson and Agnes Ashcroft. Not very helpful I know but just getting the feel of it ... Have you tried http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk yet?

Digging in the dark here found a marriage on http://www.familysearch.org/ of a Hugh Hotson 1817 Canonbie, Dumfries, Scotland spouse Isabel Armstrong quite a good marriage year for them to have had a child in 1820- thinking of the 1841 census  but nothing concrete. Have you looked on Scotlandspeople yet?

I found the first one you sent today and copied it off, I did that yesterday,
The Notes on Alexander Hotson I couldn't bring it up, typed it in several times but couldn't get it to work. What am I doing wrong? Am very interested in looking at this, have never seen it before. Couldn't find the one on Google either.
The third one is new to me also, didn't know there was a Hugh Hotson, have never seen that in all my searching. I did a search on him in Roots Web but could not find anything on him.
About Scots People have not got there yet, will have to wait a little while on that one.
Thank you so much for all the help you are giving me.
   Fran
