NSW: Bonar & Calderwood
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 11:23 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Can anyone help me find 2 of my aunties.  Their names were Elsie May Bonar nee Roberts and Sarah Alice Calderwood nee Roberts, both born in NSW, possibly Cessnock area.  Mother was Catherine Roberts born c1892 (my Grandmother) Fathers name unknown. It isn't known if she was married to their father/s, or what happened to him.

Elsie was a nurse and married Jack Bonar in Cessnock 1953
Sarah married John Calderwood in Cessnock 1934.

Any information on them and their families would be appreciated.

Dear Lyn, Hi. Welcome to rootschat.

NSW BDM Indexes are searchable on-line.  Births 1788 to 1905; Marriages 1788 to 1955; Deaths 1788 to 1975.  Goto this website below.  In the left-hand blue margin, click on Family History, click on Search Historical Indexes, click on Search Now.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

I've had a bit of a look for you.

BIRTHS:
12373/1881     ROBERTS, ELSIE MAY      parents: JOHN HENRY & ELLEN  at CAMDEN
22893/1881    ROBERTS, ELSIE MAY    parents: HENRY    & SARAH at PENRITH

No births found for any Sarah Alice ROBERTS in NSW up to 1905.

Other Rootschatters have access to NSW births after 1905 and up to 1918 which will no doubt fit the timeframe of your aunties.

MARRIAGE:
27230/1953      Groom: BONAR, JACK   Bride: ROBERTS, ELSIE MAY at CESSNOCK
11609/1934      Groom: CALDERWOOD, JOHN   Bride: ROBERTS, SARAH A at CESSNOCK

DEATH:
33033/1967      BONAR, JACK   parents: FRANCIS & ETHEL at CESSNOCK
19389/1974      CALDERWOOD, JOHN  parents: WILLIAM & ROSINA

No deaths found in NSW for Elsie BONAR and Sarah CALDERWOOD as they may even still be living.

BIRTHS:
Catherine ROBERTS born c1892, there are no less than 14 possible births between period searched 1880 to 1905 and all list mother and father's name!  It would be helpful if you knew where your Catherine Roberts was born.  What does it say on your own mother's birth certificate about birth of her mother?

Regards
Alison in QLD.

Hello Lyn

The Ryerson Index http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindx1.htm

Had a quick look and there is an Elsie May Bonar died in 1994 listed in Newcastle Herald.

Hi Cazay and Alley Cat

Thanks for your replies, sorry it has taken me so long to respond.

I have found a bit more info on my 2 Aunties, but hadn't thought of the ryerson index. I will have a look now.

My mothers birth certificate doesn't list either of them, so I will keep looking.

If anyone has info on births after 1905 or Census info on the Cessnock and Mudgee areas in NSW I would love to hear from you.

Hi Lyn.  You're welcome.  For NSW births after 1905 and up to 1918, please post a separate topic and the rootschatter with the indexes will no doubt respond.

Zip for census info.

Regarding Cessnock and Mudgee areas, try writing a letter to the historical societies regarding your genealogy.  I've always been helped by the local family history groups in the past.  My goodness they sometimes can have a wealth of information.

Also it looks like the Cessnock & District Historical Society have pioneer registers which may be accessible from the Queensland State Library.

Hi Debra, welcome to RootsChat.

Lyn hasn't been online since 2014, but she may still get notification of your post.

I was surprised reading through the thread to see that those who were possibly still living were mentioned. Please note that RC has a policy that the living cannot be discussed.

After you make 3 posts you can contact members using the PM system.
