Skeats in Quebec
« on: Tuesday 15 August 06 19:44 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information about a family called Skeats (Skeates or Skeals) in Lachine, Jacques-Cartier, Quebec. I have found them in 1881 (on Ancestry) and in 1901 Canadian census translation online. However now I am stuck. I am looking for advise about where/how I can carry on. I have read through Resources here on Rootschat but can find little that looks promising. Has anyone any ideas??

The family are headed by Henry (b 1847 in England) and Rachel (also born in England). They had 5 children in 1901, all born in Quebec.

Any advise appreciated.
Thanks
Winksetter

http://findaperson.canada411.ca/  has one person with that surname still in Quebec...wouldn't hurt to drop a line to see if it is your relative...

Oops..sory, one" Skeats"...lots of "Skeates"

Oh, this is exciting!  I found an email address, and guess what,? It's for a genealogy organization...

The email may no longer work, but the mailing address should find him...

J.J - as far as I know Contre Mastre means something like a gang leader / shift leader or foreman. By "gang" I do not mean street gang! i.e. someone who looks after a group of workers. The man in question was a farm or estate worker in England/Ireland.

Hi winksetter,

Well, they seem to have vanished in the 1911 census - I can't find them anywhere, but here are some more clues for you.

The youngest son, Samuel, served in WWI - find his attestation papers by searching for Skeates in this database (they mention the name of his wife): http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020106_e.html

There is also a record for a Frederick W. Skeates, who seems to be the son of the first Frederick W. (eldest son of Henry on 1881).

If you feel you can spring for it, I recommed ordering the full military files of either of these men.  They often contain little clues, like future addresses if they were receiving a pension, etc...  Instructions for ordering copies (fairly reasonable rates) are in a link from the page with the digital images  - once you find your guy in the database.

And for information about Quebec BMD records, see this article:

Good luck!

Lachine hasn't been transcribed at all, it seems...
Had a good time finding the 1901 entry under Skeals....someone
forgot to cross their t's!!!! ;D
Noticed afterward that you had hinted how you'd found it... :P
