Hi Chris

i only registerd   yesterday would have asked then but we had a mega thunderstorm so had to switch off as it got a bit hairy, i have just got my original birth certificate and have found out that my real name is Antwis i was born here in nottingham  but i don,t think she came from here as it was in 1951 and upto yet i have found no trace of anybody by that name,also my adopted mother  told me that she did not come from nottingham anyway,  does this make sense to you

Hi there

Just had a quick look on the 1891 census (out of curiosity mind you) for the surname ANTWIS.

There were 29 people listed with that name - mostly it seemed in Staffordshire, Cheshire and Lancashire.

What information did the certificate give - was your mums name on there as well / was a father listed.

hi Chris,
 my mothers name is given as marian  antwis,no fathers name apparently he legged it the address it gives on it is 59 nottingham road stapleford that is the address for both my birth and  where she was staying,so icould have actualy been born there that is the only information that i have at the moment, the social worker, is going to the courts to get a transcript of the the adoption adoption hearing,but i can only find antwis from liverpool  which is the dodd family and the antwis,s married into them and from what i have found is that they came from frodsham  which is on the wirral in cheshire,

Hi there

I think my first port of call would be the Family History Centre in London or the Records Office at Nottingham or other county record Office and start looking back through the GRO records from the date of your birth in 1951 (well 15 years back from that date (1936)) for a birth of a Marian Antwis.

You are lucky here in that you have a rare surname - there cant be many around at that time called Marian Antwis - you will probably find her about 1931 or there abouts.

At the Gro you have books (big books) to go through, whilst at the county records office it will all be on fiche or film - much easier to find.  Personally O love looking through all those books.

Other than that - www.1837.com is the same GRO indexex on line, but you have to pay to see the entries (10p per time - could cost you 40/50p per year x 10 = £5 or more) - but may be cheaper than going to a record office.  When you find her birth and reference number then you can take it further because her mum and possibly dad should be listed.

There is freebmd on line, but they started at 1837 and are working forward - got up to about 1908 at the moment, so they will not help you much.

while i am waiting for Delores to come up with more information,

although i don,t know just how much of help having a rare name is going to be at the moment ah well time will tell

Hi Chris, I noticed that you don't like to search the NFHS 1841/1851 disc, well there is a nice little program just for the 1841/1851 and the NFHS Baptisms,Burials and Marriages that you might like to try. It's free but you do have to register.

  Hi I hope you can help me in finding out a bit more about my ancestors.  I am searching for anything about my G.g.g.g grandfather THOMAS SELBY  he was born  around 1801-02 in rempstone notts,he was a agricultuer labourer, he was living in loughborough leics, in the 1851 census he was 49 and he married Alice selby born in gotham,notts, she was the same age. I only know of 3 children they had Benjamin (my g.g.g grandfather) he was born in rempstone ,notts around 1829-1830, John selby born  in loughborough, around 1843 and his sister Elizabeth born also in loughborough born around 1839.  This is other info that I have they were living  134 chapel rowe, and  Thomases son Benjamin who was 22 at the time was a basket maker  and had a wife named Maria selby born in leics,loughborough,she was also 22 and 2 children at that time william b.around 1849 loughborough,and Ann Maria born in 1851,loughborough. They were living next door at 133 chapel rowe. I have a number  HO107/2085 folio 23. I would like to have information if possible on both families and would like to know their wifes maiden names when they died and anything else which would help me . thank you .

hi-looking for joseph wallis and father ambrose born about 1827 and 1793 respectively
have found them in peterborough in 1835 but can find nothing in the county before that so far so though they might have come frome notts as at one stage joseph gives place of birth as gratham
