1841 - my relative was an enumerator!
« on: Saturday 19 August 06 12:42 BST (UK) »
I had just finished working through 28 pages of 1841 census data for St James sub-district 3 (St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey HO 107/1048/1 folio 50 pp 1-28) looking for clues as to the precise location of "The Crown" public house where my relative William Oliver was landlord. And there on the final page was his signature - it turns out that he was the enumerator for that sub district. It was well worth checking that final page....

If you take a look at deadpubs.co.uk/LondonPubs/Bermondsey/Crown.shtml you will find the Crown listed at 112 Spa Road and your relation mentioned

Looking at the 1872 OS Map (sheet 77) I think 'The Crown' was on the corner of Spa Road and Amelia Row. Amelia Road later changed name to Dunlop Place and the Salvation Army had large premises built virtually next door to the pub.

I note that this is an old thread but hope the info is of use and gets to you.

Sorry forgot to mention, the reason I looked in here was because I have "Olivers" in my tree in this part of Bermondsey (Abbey Street & Tabard Street)

Thanks QS. Courtesy of Southwark Local History Library I have a photo taken in 1976 which clearly shows the Crown in a corner position next to the Salvation Army Building. I'm not allowed to post it here because of copyright.

Send me a PM if you think your Olivers may be related to William.
