Census and Look up requests
« on: Tuesday 02 November 04 13:15 GMT (UK) »
I'd like to accept the offer of a look-up in the WAR 1851 census for - wait for it - SMITH...please..

William SMITH a cordwainer and his wife Sarah lived at Church St Nuneaton when their children were born c 1820, so they may be still alive aged about 60 in 1851.

Their son William Smith, born 1820 at Nuneaton is my real target.  He was a railway porter at Dudley when his daughter Sarah Ann was born in 1853, but ...  He was supposed to have married Sophia Beasley and had a daughter Elizabeth before then.  Found this William in 1881, 1891, and 1901, but no earlier.  Would be so grateful for any help.

Hi Lori,
I found your elder William Smith on 1851 Warks.

Bond St. Nuneaton
William Smith  Head  60  Boot and Shoe maker    Warks, Nuneaton
Sarah Smith    Wife   64  Dressmaker                    Warks, Nuneaton
HO107/2065  Folio 55  Page 6

I can't find your younger William Smith on Warks 1851. He may have alreadly moved to the Dudley area which would come under Worcestershire.

I did, however, find him on the 1871

1 Berkley Terrace, Aston
William Smith    Head Wid 50    Clerk Timber Trade   Warks, Nuneaton
Catherine Smith  Dau   Un 24   Housekeeper            Warks, Nuneaton
Sarah Ann Smith  Dau   Un 17   Warehouse Pin Pkr.  Worcs, Dudley
Betsey Smith      GrDau       9ths                                 Warks, Birmingham
RG10/3141   Folio 4  Page 4

Hope this helps,
Cheers,

To India in California,

That's just wonderful.  Thank you very very much.  Certainly looks like Wm Smith senior, so glad to find him, and yes, I'm sure its Wm Smith the younger, but there's lots we haven't been told there!  Is there any Australian research I might be able to do in return?  I'm not new to fam hist, but new to this way of doing things.  Thanks again.  lorisg
