A quick thought, if you have ever sold photo's for use as a cover page, then you probably know how many of these are knocked back because the photo subject takes up too much space: An editor needs space - and lots of it. Why? he has to put up titles, contents etc: Likewise if you are using a back ground on a montage dont be tempted to put a picture there just because it is nice - some of it (possibly a lot of it) is going to be hidden by your other pic's. It's almost the opposite of all you ever learned about tight cropping.

Denn,
Never sold any photos! only a few paintings!
but I placed mine on top of all the others and then used opacity to see  the others through it.  It seems to have worked, but I'm still re arranging and resizing because of the darn negatives spaces!  Denn I must be doing something wrong because I think I'm running out of memory doing it.  I feel the need for a new puter is coming.

Gadget,
I was so inspired by what you did for Keith, and I do like yours, what I am trying to achieve first is something like yours, I think to do a similar one as Keith's I will have to keep practising! but from your tips I can see now on the image what I think you've done, or at least some of how! I hadn't thought about "masking" out the person but that's a good idea and lose all the background in the image, so might play at that, I have some of the houses where my mother and her family lived but unfortunately when I took the photo there are some "nasty" cars parked in front!
still playing ;D  Thanks for the offer of help,
Newbie

Thank you so much Denn for the clear instructions. I have been playing all evening and have just completed my first montage!! Eyes completely shot to pieces.
I can't post the montage here...all photos of my sister, one in a bikini, she would kill me!
It was a lot of trial and error to get the pieces to fit though.
Another question.....Is there an easy way to resize a photo once added to the montage? I just kept deleting the layer that was too big, resized the photo and then re added it.
Thanks again for all your fine work with restorations and tutoring
Jackie

PS Well maybe I can post it as a tiny one for a few minutes!! ........gone

It would be lovely to see all three of your 'gos'' Perhaps we could use this thread for exhibiting them.

I love adventurous people  :)

Done it!
still not happy with it but it's work in progress, some images at bottom left are too small don't like the spacing, not sure if there's too much of mums face (a bit white?) showing upper right? but I'm still trying. ;D

What file format are you using?

Have a look at the uploading images - practise post thread on How to use RC, -  sometimes it has to be done via an ordinary image posting and then an upload to profile.
