Hi Monica,

Thank you for the information, it is much appreciated.

I am attempting to tie in Benjamin Carter to 'my' Carters - I'm convinced they are related because Severn Stoke was such a small place.

I have the IGI baptism records for several Carters and have managed to link most of them in, but just cannot sort out Benjamin - you have now given me another line of enquiry to follow too  :)  Although I have two Joseph Carters on my tree neither of their dates fit in with the Joseph living next door to Benjamin and I think that Joseph born in Pirton might be another branch of the family altogether  ::)

Are there anymore Carters in Severn Stoke in 1851 please?  Other than the ones you have kindly found for me?  I think I may have to request a look-up for 1841 too later on to see what that shows ...

Thank you again for your help.

Maggie  :)

Hi Monica,

Thanks again for the information.  I have a James Carter but he was born c1806 in Severn Stoke - so it's probably not him  :-\

Anyway, it gives me another Carter branch to research ...  :D

Thanks for your efforts.

Maggie  :)

Hi Maggie

I know you've put "Completed" in the title - but I thought you might like this:

1851 - HO107/2046, folio 375, p 3.
Hartlebury, Worcs.

All CARTER.
James, Head, M, 43, Carpenter & Beer House Keeper, b. Severn Stoke.
Mary, Wife, M, 43, b. Shelsley(?), Worcs.
Sarah, Daughter, 14, Scholar, b. Stoke Prior, Worcs.
Maryann, Daughter, 7, Scholar, b. Hartlebury.
Alfred Carter, Son, 5, Scholar, b. Hartlebury.
Emma Carter, Daughter, 2, b. Hartlebury.

It would be great if someone could have a look at the house name on the census page - it looks like "Jenny Hole" but that doesn't sound likely.

Hi Monica,

You are good  :D

Thank you again for your efforts - I think he might be one of mine.  These Carters are proving quite a difficult lot to track down  ::)

The house name does seem a bit quaint - to say the least  :-\

Hi Maggie,

Just saw the reference to "Jenny Hole" in your messages. "Jenny Hole" was a hamlet on the River Stour near Stourport which is where the Stour runs into the Severn. Jenny Hole was in the parish of Hartlebury. There is still an old house named Jenny Hole where the hamlet was.

Hi BigL

Welcome to RootsChat!

Thanks for sorting that out - so my interpretation of the writing was right.  There must be a story behind a name like that.  It's so good to have local knowledge - sharing it is what makes RC such a good site.

Thanks,
Monica
