Hello canada twig,

What denomination were your Hess and Seabrook ancestors? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or possibly Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

The Eighteenth Century Sources. may assist you to find your Copeland and Henderson ancestors. Some of them are on John Hayes failteromhat.com website

Townparks, St. Johns is the townland representing the liberties of Wexford town - directly outside the walls of the town.
It is clear across the county from Old Ross.

Oops - just noticed that the original query is from 2006!

The surname Hess suggests this was a Palatine family. AFIK there was a Palatine community in the vicinity of Old Ross. There are published works (books) on the Palatines in Ireland.

Wexflyer,
You are right Hess was a Palatine family name along with the surnames Hornick, Jeakyll, Jeakle, Reinhardt, Rynhart, Poole, there was a Palatine Stettlement on( Lord Ram of Gorey) Old Ross Estate.  The Church of Ireland church in Old Ross was their place of worship and the church register is full of Palatine names . A lot of them were massacred in Scullabogue in 1798. As a result many of those who managed to survive emigrated to the USA & Canada.

The book Old Ross The Town that Never Was, by Bernard Browne gives a very thorough account of the Palatines in Old Ross.

Thanks for the tips. I did find the family on a ships list, listed as roman catholic , and part of an immigrant group. However they never called themselves that in canada. I would really like to read these books. That shall be my next search! Apparently our Seabrook connection had a father and brother killed in Scullabogue.

Canada Twig,

That book is now out of print I believe but you should be able to get that book through your local library via an Inter-Library Loan.  It is an excellent book and well worth the read, it gives a lot of information on that Palatine settlement.
