Morgan Thomas - Bedlinog
« on: Wednesday 23 August 06 19:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anybody fill in the gaps regarding Morgan Thomas, who farmed at Coly Isaf, Bedlinog? He was there in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses, and was not there in 1891. Anyone know where he was in 1871 and 1881 and when he died? I believe he may have rented Coly Isaf from the Guest family and their Dowlais Iron Company - they certainly owned it in 1912, when it was sold to the current occupants. Can anyone confirm that?
     Regards, Gareth

Hi Cas,
Thanks for that - it's definitely my man. Now for 1881! If he died locally, I might head back there to see if there is a grave or memorial, but I'd need full details before I tackle those hills again. I'd never been to Bedlinog before this week, but it's on a mountainside and every road is up - with Coly Isaf (or Colly Isha) right on the top! Real mountain goat country!
   Cheers, Gareth

Thanks again Cas, you're brilliant.
So Morgan presumably popped his clogs between 1871 and 1881 and none of the children wanted to take on the farm. Margaret had left there by 1891; I wonder if she died or just moved out because it was too much work?
