A sad Story but possibly a rootschat challenge
« on: Thursday 24 August 06 12:47 BST (UK) »
I have been cleaning out my cupboards and found some old glass dishes.  I haven't thought about the couple who owned them for years.

The elderly couple were close friends of my mates parents.  I only met the husband a handfull of times and never met his wife as she passed away some years before.

Anyway, he died about 15 yrs ago and the only people who really knew him were my mates parents.  So, they dealt with all of the funeral arrangements and his belongings (a horrible task) and gave me the glass dishes.  They told me that they would keep the things that were dear to him, wedding photos etc as the couple had no children and all of their family died in the concentration camps.  They put a peice in the paper and tried various ways of trying to find someone but couldn't find anyone else that were close to this couple.

Anyway, I'm going to have a chat with my mates parents and see if I can get some details.  I know they would be thrilled to pass on the personal possesions to someone who has family ties.

Surely, a couple can't die without a single living relative  ??? :'(

As for the glass bowls they are coming out of the cupboard for a party this weekend.

I'll update when I get some details (I don't even know the couples surnames at present)  but hoping that you will help me  :D

Before you risk your mates trashing those dishes, check their makers marks. My wife was given a gaudy vase that my sister in law bought at a trash and treasure for 25c. It's Carltonware and worth about 250 quid.

Thanks peeps.  It is strange as I haven't thought about the old gent for a couple years.

I don't think they are of any value Senojekips, just big old heavy glassware from the 70s but they have come in very handy for salad bowls.  The big fruit bowl hasn't any markings on it but when I shine it up, it really catches the light/colours and although very old fashioned, I think it's very beautiful.  So that's why it's hidden at the back of my cupboard as I would be upset if someone broke it.

As teenagers me and my mate used to drive Scottie(the old gent) to Blackpool for a day out - we used to get there, park up, have lunch in his favorite cafe and then go home  ::)  Then listen to him all the way home telling my mate how to drive.  He would allways try to slip us a tenner for taking him but we would never accept it.

He allways talked about his beloved Gertie but I think he went to pot, a bit,  after she died.

I remember my mates parents who are just the loveliest people on the planet saying to me, 'Fiona have these as we haven't the room for all his things, we are going to store his photos in our wardrobe as we can't bare to throw them on the skip'

So, I'll update you but I think it would be a good challenge for us  :) 8)

In Blackpool's local evening paper there is a "Memory Lane" article once a week.

There are all the usual letters re old schoolchums etc. but this is not every "letter"  If you could recall the name of the cafe, or places you visited and the time frame - may be, just may be, a local reader may recognise the details.  Its amazing how the informaton gets passed around.

Its a long shot but if you want the contact details I  will fish out the information for you.

Thanks very much for the suggestion Jude.

However, my memory is not that good, I'll ask my mate and see if she remembers.

Thanks again peeps.
