WW1 Transport Ships
« on: Friday 25 August 06 17:40 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on HM's Transport Toronto as it was on this ship my great uncle committed suicide.  So far I can't come up with any information on the ship or even on other transport ships.
Any help/advice much appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry, all I can tell you is that he was Ship's Cook on the Toronto. On the death certificate it states he died at Liverpool though death registered in Southampton.  He cut his throat with a rasor while 'of unsound mind'.  No-one in the family can tell me anything more about it as his name was never mentioned again afterwards although one story suggests he was suffering from shellshock and did not want to go back to France.  This doesn't fit in with him being a cook however.
His name - Charles Alexander Waters, date of death 25th July 1916.
Thanks

Hi Fwaters

I have found a couple of references relating to a SS (steamship ie. merchant navy) Toronto and although either side of the date you are enquiring about, I will post for interest in case it is the same ship :-\

Quote
Hull: SS Toronto (Wilson Line) travelling from New York to Hull.Embarking at New York.Official Number: 113569.List of passengers disembarking at Hull. 1913 Nov 24
BT 26/547/94

Quote
London: SS Toronto (White Star Line) travelling from Albany to London.Embarking at Albany.Official Number: 113569. List of passengers disembarking at London. 1922 Aug 1
BT 26/721/22

The National Archives code BT26 relates to passenger arrival lists.

Have also found mention of "Toronto" arriving at Ellis Island, New York 29 Dec 1917 from Hull via Plymouth http://www.ellisisland.org - searched for Smith arriving on Toronto (advanced search)

I'm wondering, as I'm sure you are, whether "Toronto" was a passenger liner succumbed to transporting troops for the duration or at least some of WW1 ???

Toronto built 1900 scrapped 1923 - 6,035 tons

Thank you so much for that information.  I do think you've found the correct ship, especially due to mention of Hull and the Wilson Line.
Charles brother Harrry was on a Wilson Line ship, the Eskimo, which was used by the Navy during WW1.  I've found out a lot about the Eskimo, but was struggling with the Toronto.  This certainly gives me a good start.

Thanks again
