1861 or 1871 Census Sussex - John E Thorpe
« on: Wednesday 03 November 04 21:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Its me again!!

I have recently become aware of a John E Thorpe who was born in either Ore (1881 census) or Fairlight (1891 census).  I am sure that he fits into my tree somewhere but I need to know who his parents are.

John was 27 in the 1881 census when he was married and living in Hastings. Can he be found in either the 1861 or 1871 censuses?

Kind regards

Roger

Hi Robyn

I bet that the weather in Oz  is better than here -I've just struggled home in the first snow of the winter!!!

Sorry to have taken a few days to get back to you but I have been busy with other things for the past few nights and I wanted to look carefully at all the Thorpes that you came up with.

Regarding John E Thorpe Eleanor's, 12 year old son is possibly the best bet.  Eleanor seems to have been a bit of a floosie - lots of children and no husband.  Possibly she and he did not know what his correct age was.  However I have no idea who John the Lodger was but I douby if he is John E Thorpe since it would seem unlikely that anyone would quote their age as 23 in 1871 but only 27 ten years later.

Now for the bad news for you.  I have never seen the 1871 census and every one of the male Thorpes that you have found (with the exception of John the Lodger) are definitely my relations.  In fact Arthur is my grandfather (my mother's father), Fred is my great grandfather and somewhere there should be a Charles (Otto's father) born Fairlight 1804 who was my great great grandfather.  This being the case I would love to see scans or transcript for all of them.  I feel rather guilty asking for so much information but it will allow me to put so much flesh on the bones of my ancestors.  If it makes life more reasonable for you you could post them at the rate of three or families each week.  However I will be eternally grateful to you for any information that you can provide on my Thorpes.

Take care.
