Using free search, I found that there is only one Alexander Brown aged between 8 and 11 living in Dunbar in the 1871 census.  I used the wildcards Alex* Brown*.

Thanks for replying. Since starting the thread, I found Scotlandspeople. That's the one I was looking for, living with a great-aunt. Still to find out where his mother went though.
