Crimea, Sevastopol/Balaklava- modern photos
« on: Wednesday 30 August 06 19:59 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm just back from a trip to the Ukraine, and managed a flying visit to Sevastopol and Balaklava. If anyone is interested to see how these places look today, I'm going to put some photos online. Will add the link soon, so watch this space.

Hi

I'd certainly like to have a look at your pictures to see what the place looks like now.  Actually, I'm planning a trip to the Crimea sometime next year with the Birmingham War Research Society (run by Ian Alexander) who organise trips there twice a year.  I have an ancestor who was killed at Sevastopol in 1855 so I'm really keen to see it.

Fascinating places Annie!!
The suburbs of Sevastopol are a bit dreary (full of Soviet era housing blocks for the Navy), but the city centre and harbour area are pleasant enough. Also, just outside the city are the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Chersonesus, which is a lovely spot.
Balaklava harbour is a lovely spot to while away time in a waterfront cafe (or indeed have a swim!) You can also visit the Soviet submarine pens dug into the mountainside.
Balaklava battlefield is covered in vineyards these days, so you can't really wander where you wish. There are also a few modern buildings around, but nevertheless I was pleasantly surprised.

You'll have a great trip I think Jayson. If you'd like a few suggestions where else to visit in the Crimea (by which I mean not related to the war), let me know.

Here's that link. Hopefully some more photos will follow.

I don't know what we all expect when we think about that part of the world ...... but what a beautiful place it is !! just look at the colour of the water  :)  ........... Did you go on a tour of the battlefields or did you just wander around on your own ?? and what did you find out - that you didn't know before ??

Hi Neil

What lovely photos! It's certainly a beautiful place as Annie said - much more so than I would have expected it to be.  Balaklava Harbour looks idyllic . . . wouldn't mind a dip!

From what I've seen of the place Neil, I'd certainly like to hear your suggestions for other trips around the Crimea.
