I couldn't find a place called Bank of Bishopton in Kirkcudbright but the Postal Address Book lists Bishopton Cottages and Bishopton Dairy, both with the postcode DG6 4TJ.  Go to:
www.multimap.com/map/places.cgi and enter the postcode to see their locations. It may be that, originally, this was the Bank of Bishopton.

I have a McMurrie ancestor who was 'in Bishopton', died Balig (early 1800's), and consequently am very interested in your post :) And any replies that might throw some light on the subject. I did find some interesting information about 8 months ago, and have been frantically searching through miles and miles of 'saved' references that might be relevant. No luck yet, but I know that the info is there, somewhere! From what I remember, Bishopton fell into an area where parish or county boundries changed .....obviously 'bank' has nothing to do with a financial institution, and I seem to remember Bishopton being split up into different areas. Sorry ...hang in there ...I will find it ....and post as soon as I have!

Hi Scatza,

Thanks for that. I know what you mean about saved references, I think I have more in my "favorites" than are loaded on Mr Google  :)  Takes me for ever to find some of them.

It will be interesting to find out just where Bank of Bishopton No.3. is located. I recently found out the background on another strange address, Bremners Land Duntocher where my granny was married and my mother born.  Mum thought she was born on a farm, but it turned out that Bremners Land was a tenament block on Dumbarton Road. The land orginally belonging to a local farmer named Bremner.

Looking forward to reading your information.

Bye for now.

Hi eilidh

I've scouted around the area on the census to try to locate this place and I may have found it.

First of all there is a place called Bishopton right down in the south of the parish of Twynholm.  It is on the west bank of the River Dee, almost opposite Kirkcudbright.  A modern OS map shows it well.  The other addresses listed in the census close by - or at least apparently so from the enumerators schedules - have Kirkeoch and Newtown in them.  These are also close to Bishopton.

If you go to the old maps site:

http://www.old-maps.co.uk

then navigate to Kirkcudbright via the gazetteer.  Once there go west - maybe only one click - and Bishopton Wood, with a house/farm called Bishopton appears in the frame.  Use the enlarge button at the bottom to see a better image.

I think you will find that there were a number of households living in this place and the enumerator just calls them No1, No 2 and No 3.

Hope you can follow the instructions to find it!

Nell

Thank you so much Nell, I appreciate you finding out this information, as will Scatza. I will certainly follow your instructions and hopefully pin-point where my ancestors lived. Bye for now, and once again a big thanks.
