Info. request: RAINBOW family. (from Australia)
« on: Friday 05 November 04 04:14 GMT (UK) »
I have a Baptism dated 12th Sept 1790 in Elstree Hertsfordshire for a Joseph Rainbow, his father is Thomas Rainbow and his mother is listed simply as Mary.
I then have a Henry Rainbow (son presumably) born aprox. 1820 in Elstree Hertsfordshire UK and then married in 1853 in Melbourne Australia.
That gap is substantial and I have no way of knowing if his family came out as a whole or if he came out as a young man.

I am trying to find this info from Australia.

Thankyou for any help!!

on the Familysearch site in the IGI section there are quite a lot of Rainbows and a number from Elstree Herts

it looks like no proof of course that henry might have at least 2 sisters and a brother

Emma  25/3/1826 also another emma christened 29/1/1832 could be 1st died or they just didnt have her christened till then
Susannah 24/5/1827
William 17/5/1839

I will go and see if any of them are on the 1871 perhaps if someone else has 1841.or51.or61 might have more luck cos the girls will probally married will look for that as well get back later   sandie

couldnt find any definate on 1871, so I had some spare credits on the 1837 BDM site I had a look for william in 1839 but no birth registered so could be they all went to Australia

perhaps a look for william in 1839 on the Australian BDM might be succesful.

let me know if I can look anywhere else for you  sandie

Hi,here is your Rainbow family in the 1841 census for Elstree.HO 107/438/9
Joseph Rainbow     age 50     ag. labourer
Elizabeth    "                  50
Louisa        "                  18
Susannah   "                  15
Mary          "                  12
Emma         "                   9
Eliza           "                   7
William       "                   5
From the IGI Joseph married Elizabeth Coleman,Elstree 23/11/1818.
Son Henry was christianed,Elstree 1/2/1821.
As you can see Henry does not appear on the census so had already left in 1841.Could he have been deported?
Also on the census (different address)
James Rainbow        age60       ag. labourer
Mary         "                 60
And also another entry(again different address)
James Rainbow        age15       ag. labourer
Ages above 15 were rounded up or down to nearest 5.
Hope this helps,regards,Pete 8)

Hi Jaki, I am a descendant living in Australia of Henry Rainbow, and also of the Sinclair's from Cleat (where I will be visiting in May this year), so we must be both from the same line. I have a reasonable amount of info, but would love to know which Rainbow you are descended from.
Henry's married Matilda Withers in 1853 and had:
Joseph b 1853
William b 1856
Henry b 1857
Matilda b 1859
James b 1860
Henry died in 1864 at Buninyong, Victoria.
I am one of his great grand-daughter's, from Joseph Rainbow. Would love to hear more from you and can provide an update of most of Henry's line in Australia if that's what you require.
All the best

There is a good  chance we are related...  ???
My line of descent comes through  Joseph Rainbow, I guess that makes me a great-great- ? not sure how many greats grand-daughter. Of his children I am related to Catherine Drever Rainbow, who married William Meldrum Chapman...  and then on from there my grandmothers. :)

Hi Jaki, that's what I thought. Your grandmother I guess is Marion McDonnell. I exchange Christmas cards with Marion most years, altho I think her health is not as good as it was. I'm guessing your Mum and Dad are Jeanette and John??
I hope I'm on the right track. We visited WA about 20 yrs ago and met up with Auntie Ella which was great and got a lot of family history from her about her immediate family.
Also just prior to that we visited Gippsland in Vic where Joseph & Marianne (Downie) settled to start with and met up with the Williams sisters who were Marianne's nieces and they had lots of family history info and photo's. I'm not sure what happened to all the photo's as none of them had any children to leave them to, but there were quite a few of all the children of William and Ann Downie (nee Sinclair).
I have a bit of a print out that my Uncle Keith put together that I could send you of the Rainbow side specifically. Marion has my address. Just ask her for Anne Mansell's address.
Keep in touch and I hope I can help.
All the best
Anne

Jaki:

I'm interested in your William Meldrum Chapman - any idea of his background?  I'm from a very large tree of Meldrums originating in England, so kind of collect any and all references to the name.
