Thanks for the info. I think you're right about Georges birth cert....
I have a letter(2001) from one of Georges grandsons (didn't know they were connected then). He said George was believed to be the illegitimate son of a man named Smallman from the area.....!
My Smallman tree is huge and getting bigger by the day. It is very satisfying when you can add a loose Smallman to the tree though!

 On the 1901 census are George Smallman aged 40 born at at Hedge Hills Glos, living in Upton Bishop.
with wife Caroline aged 37 born Allwod Green Glos.

It does look like Lydia is a possibility for Georges mum doesn't it?
Thanks for all the lovely census info, especially that on Lydia.   :) I have another Smallman marrying into the Trigg family a generation or so back. 
Interesting about Lydias daughter in 1891, Edith MILDA. My grandmother was a Smallman and she had a sister called MILDA. I always thought it was a form of Matilda, but her daughter says she was just Milda, wonder if this is where it came from?
