« on: Sunday 10 September 06 08:29 BST (UK) »
Hello Could someone please lookup the family of William and Jane or Jean Leckie - Jane had son William born c August 1865 at Ballantrae so he would be about 5 years old.
Thanks

Are you sure they would be in Ayrshire, Carmel. I've checked broadly for a William Leckie (and variations), with age range 4 to 7 and can only come up with 1 - parents Andrew and Agnes in Ardrossan  ???

Thanks for your help Gadget.  No I"m not sure that they are there - just have the birth of William in 1865 to go on and told he was illegitimate.  Is there a Jane or Jean Leckie who could be his mother there in 1871?  This is a problem branch for one of my relatives.  I have only just started trying to help her find missing people.

Regards

Hi Carmel

I've found his birth anyway - August 31 1865, Ballantrae, illegitimate. Jane was a domestic servant.

GROS Ref - 579 - 35

Jane might well have married in the intervening period. Where did you get the William Leckie, snr, name from? There is no mention of a father on the birth cert

I've got a few things to do, so will have a look later.

A Jane Leckie married and Andrew McClelland in Ballantrae in 1867 - GROS Ref 579- 4.

There are four other Jane Leckies marrying in Ayrshire in the 1865-1871 peid. However no others are in Ballantrae. There are no husbands named William.

I think the next thing is to search on this Andrew McClelland to find if William jnr is with him in 1871.

Yep in 1871 -

I think William is listed as William MacClelland, aged 5, with parents Andrew (28, farm servant) and Jane (27). Living Ballantrae, Logan House. GROS Ref - 579 - 5 - 6

With them are Margaret, 3 and Mary, 1

Thanks Gadget
This is all happening too quickly for me.  I thought I'd seen the McLelland name somewhere but while I'm still looking for a reference to him you have probably found William.  As I said I've just started on this line.  I told a relative last night that I'd be happy to have a look at her problem people and she sent me a gedcom file today.  Certificates she has are coming snail mail so I will have a better picture then but this is a good start.

Thanks again

William could, of course, have reverted to Leckie in subsequent censuses. It would definitely be worth your while subscribing to the Scotlands People website www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

I try to limit the units I use for each searcher  ;)

You have done more than enough for me Gadget.  Thanks very much.  I've found where I saw the name McLelland and its on another web page I got from google with 3 sons born to Jane and Andrew after marriage and one went to Canada and there is an email address for a descendant so I will try that when I go through what is on the site.

Thanks again
