Thomas Street Limehouse In London
« on: Tuesday 12 September 06 19:16 BST (UK) »
Hi
This street is probably long gone,My Grandfathers Brother Thomas Charles Mathew (jrn) Lived in number 28 in the early 1900 and after. All but 2  of his children were born there. Are there  any reference library departments. That might have in book form  photo's of the area in the 1900 with a some information about Limehouse. I know my library have books and old photo's. Going back to the 1800 because i have photocopied some nice one of our area. So just thought i would ask :)

There is still a Thomas Street in Woolwich, which is about the same area.

OK Celia - the present Thomas St. is NOT it, alas. Woolwich is South of the river Thames, and Mile End is North.

There is a website which shows old London streets, but I can't find it at present. But I bet someone can....

Meles

I once knew the A to Z of central London, North of the River,  off by heart. I may seem a country bumpkin but I'm an adopted Londoner really - more rellies there than anywhere  :D

Hi

I think the one you might mean is no longer there.  Thomas Street is rather a common name for London so ...

You can see it on this map for 1862 http://www.motco.com/Map/81006/ and click on Thomas Street (13,19) - it is in the eastern part of the map just to the right of Trafalgar Square (the Mile End one!).

This would come under the Tower Hamlets Archives, who can be very helpful indeed especially if you are not local and they do have an email contact on their site

Good luck
