Hi curiousfox,

And welcome to the "Ware" Clan - there are a number of us with relatives in the area!

Sam's Yard was in Amwell End - which is at the south end of Ware High Street.

There are a fews photos of the area on my website - including the page:

What names have you living in Ware - bet they were bargemen!!  ;D

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith,
my grt grandmothers name was Annie Foreman.
her husband was Samuel. he was a platelayer - i think that may have something to do with the railways.
this was Annie's 2nd marriage. her 1st husband was John Biscoe. they lived in various villages around the Ware/Much Hadham area. although mostly in Little Amwell.
Annie was born in Ireland, i think she came to England to escape the famine.
feel sure that she would have known your ancestors fairly well - must have been quite close neighbours.
thanks for the photo and the very interesting link.

Hi JohnF,

Sorry never thought  about the origin of the name - I know that there were quite a few named yards in Ware - presume that they were named after someone/thing in the area.

Thanks for this information all - I think a relative (by marriage) of mine was living at 8 Sam's Yard in the 1939 register.  I'd never hear of the yards in Ware.

He's registered as a blind pensioner - so that would have been tough especially as I think his wife (my direct ancestor) wasn't with him.  She was at her sister's in Hoddesdon.
They were my Great GM Katherine (Price by her first marriage, nee Probert) & her second husband Harry Andrews.
