My boring ancestors
« on: Saturday 06 November 04 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Everyone here seems to have the most exciting ancestors. Mine are just plain old English peasants for generations with one Welsh lass married in about 200 years ago. I have chased all the legends:
The first was that one of my grandfathers was Jewish. I thought that's good, they're smart. An idle rumour
Then I chased an Irish ancestor from an obscure village in Cork - also nonsense.
Then I tried to find a mysterious French immigrant of about 1800 who would have been twice in my line - but he was not French but from Somerset or Suffolk.
They don't appear in workhouse records.
They didn't get transported to the colonies, or hung, or jailed.
None of them ever emigrated, even to the Isle of Wight.
Nobody but me is even bothering to search for them.
They had the great knack of disappearing altogether or of surfacing out of nowhere but otherwise they were still boringly English.
There was an exciting story of an Aunt who dumped her two kids and left for Canada with "another bloke". I have never even found evidence that she existed at all.
Has anyone got ancestors as dull as mine? I challenge you.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

And I thought it was just me, Hack!
My Mum's family all came from Derbyshire, as far back as the records go. One family was said to be Gypsies but there is no sign of this being true, I reckon someone just had dark curly hair!
Dad's family actually rattled around 3 or 4 counties (Staffordshire, Worcestershire, and Shropshire).  One of them was supposed to have a call an unclaimed Wallace fortune in Scotland but it seems so unlikely I haven't even looked into it.
I console myself that they are what made England the country She is but I do envy the other's with their spicy stories ;)

Milord Hack ;D

you haven't been paying sufficient attention to my posts.

On this forum I have wailed loud and long about the lack of excitment in my family tree.

Nobody has more Ag Lab's per square inch than I have.

I doubt if anyone has collected more servants than I have.

My most exciting occupation is Draper's Assistant  - not even The Draper for heaven's sake! Actually I have an entire family of Draper's Assistants in Huddersfield!

Great Grandma Caroline was supposed to be a Romany - until I discovered she was a char lady in Cheadle Cheshire with no Gypsy blood at all throbbing in her veins.

All agog when I thought I had found my grandfather, aged 14, in Hardwicke Reform School, Gloucestershire -  but the records have all been destroyed so I will never know if it was him.

I optimistically search for wills even though I know they had nowt to leave.

They just plod along generation after generation - no criminals, no colonies, no excitment. I don't know how I stay awake long enough to continue researching.

Lovely people though! ;D ;D ;D

Fitty - is this him?

The Bicycle Song
Lyrics by Diana Hinshelwood
Music by Steven Chadwick

Don't eat kippers when you're riding up a hill
The bones will get stuck, and you really could feel ill
Eat a trifle by the pier
Wash it down with ginger beer
But don't eat kippers when you're riding up a hill

Don't drink milkshake when you're riding round the bend
It really is too frothy and your hair will stand on end
Drink some water as you steer
Even when you're changing gear
But don't drink milkshake when you're riding round the bend

Don't eat jelly when you're riding down the lane
It wibbles and it wobbles and it's really quite a pain
Eat bananas without fear
They won't stick into your ear
But don't eat jelly when you're riding...
But don't drink milkshake while you're riding
But, don't eat kippers while you're riding down the lane

To put an end to this apparent lack of interesting ancestors, it is your duty to your descendants to get out there & do something MEMORABLE! But preferably not criminal or adulterous  :-\ What about streaking?   :o

 FAMILY HISTORIAN'S LAMENT
I've been doing family history now for nearly 30 years,
Diligently tracing my illustrious forebears,
From Pigeon Lake to Peterborough, Penrith to Penzance,
My merry band of ancestors has led me quite a dance.

There's cooks from Kent and guards from Gwent and chimney sweeps from Chester
There's even one daft fisherman lived all his life in Leicester,
There's no-one rich or famous, not even well-to-do,
Though a second cousin twice removed once played in goal for Crewe.

I've haunted record offices from Gillingham to Jarrow,
The little grey cells of my mind would humble Hercule Poirot.
I've deciphered bad hand writing that would shame a three year old,
And brought the black sheep of the family back into the fold.

My bride of just three minutes, I left standing in the Church,
As I nipped into the graveyard for a spot of quick research.
Eventually I found an uncle, sixty years deceased.
That was far more satisfying than a silly wedding feast.

After three weeks of wedded bliss, my wife became despondent.
She named the Public Record Office as the co-respondent.
I didn't even notice when she packed her bags and went,
I was looking for a great granddad's will who died in Stoke on Trent.

But now my 30 years obsession's lying in the bin
Last Tuesday week, I heard some news that made me pack it in.
T'was then my darling mother, who is not long for this earth,
Casually informed me they'd adopted me at birth!!
