Minorca, Sunderland?
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 18:51 BST (UK) »
My g.g. grandfathers marriage certificate says his place of residence was Minorca. This has had me totally baffled and after hours spent searching I found a post on this message board about a family who lived at no. 16 Minorca, Sunderland.

My g.g. grandparents married in Sunderland in 1854 so would be interested to know if Minorca did actually exist there.

There is a Minorca Close in Sunderland, see http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=440515&Y=556909&A=Y&Z=1 for the exact location. I can't see it marked on any old maps....but I expect someone else out there can!

I just checked this out in Kellys Directory of 1890 at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp and from the town gazetteer in there it would seem that Minorca was in approx. the position marked by the arrow on this map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=440510&Y=557353&A=Y&Z=1
According to the 1891 census there were some 25 dwellings there

Thanks a lot for your help, I thought it a bit strange that he would have been living in Minorca, but why wasnt there a house number with it I wonder?

Minorca was also in existence as a street name in Sunderland in 1861, when there appear to have been some 23 dwellings.
Interestingly, Minorca also seems to have been in use as a street name in places as far apart as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Man.

This 1827 Map shows the location of many of the old Sunderland streets http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p2387&ref1=2258

Minorca is to the north of Church Walk opposite Holy Trinity Church.
